Carla Botes is a Cape Town based fine artist and illustrator. She plies her craft in multiple media, including gouache, acrylics, ink and pastel; favoring the much underestimated qualities of gouache. She balances conceptual intention and artistic tension between capturing perfection in an imperfect medium, by an imperfect artist.

My young subject met Mr Lemon for the very first time at the ripe age of 7, untainted and unprepared, completely without previous memory of its taste. The sensory surprise manifested so splendidly across his innocent face; a true reflection of this precious experience. This boy becomes a mirror, an uncurated expression of Mr Lemon himself.
It is not the Lemon, it is our experience, sensory observation of and engagement with the Lemon and all that a lemon will ever represent which truly gives it its taste. So honey, Lemons don’t get much sweeter than this…..

After my young subject of only 7 years old tasted Mr Lemon for the first time in his life, he was asked to take a second bite out of the fruit’s wedge. Although he now has a fresh yet existing memory of the lemon’s taste, he could only partially mask his reaction. The sourness overwhelms him still and manifests in a haplessly endearing display of facial contortions we can all so readily identify with.
